As the parent of a child with a learning disability, Martha Kabbes Burns - founder of Education Center School and a
former teacher, gradually became aware of the need for a special kind of education for certain exceptional students. At home, she soon found herself teaching a small group of children with various
learning disabilities and differences.
It was during this time that the idea for Education Center School came to her.
After several years of working with children in her home, Mrs. Burns leased a small building in northeast Jackson and began to enroll more students and hire additional teachers. The year 1964 marks the formal beginning of Education Center School.
Continued growth made it possible to construct the present location at 4080 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS 39216.
Mrs. Burns' sister, Lynn Macon, has been the school principal since 1971. The sisters worked closely together and were a team in creating the individualization concepts implemented for the exceptional
child, in a non-traditional school setting. After the tragic death of Mrs. Kabbes Burns in July 2002, Lynn Macon continues the traditions of the school as administrator and principal.
Today, Education Center School is accredited on a twelve month basis by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
and Southern Association of Independent Schools.
