Valedictorian – Class of 2005 – Bethany Jean Phillips
Bethany Phillips attended Education
Center School for four years, and was President of our Student Council and one of our most academically talented students. She participated in the Millsaps College Leadership
Conference, and received the Award for Outstanding School Service at ECS. She received two awards for Outstanding Citizenship, was nominated for the National Youth Leadership Conference, belonged to
Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and has received a Presidential Award
Bethany has volunteered for many area organizations such as Clinton Animal Rescue and
Adoption, and the Belhaven Nursing Home. She was a member of the Drama Club, Chorus, and Student Council. She was involved in the National Beta Club, Venture Club, and
Students Against Destructive Decisions. She was the Downtown Exchange Club’s Youth of the Month, for the month of December, was chosen as one of our five Clarion-Ledger CLASS
Award recipients, and received the Presidential Educational Excellence Award.
Bethany will begin her freshman year at East Central Community College in the fall of 2005.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William “Billy” Phillips.
Martha Kabbes Burns Award – Class of 2005 – Carrie Rose Evans
“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more

This award is given each year to a senior who demonstrates the characteristics of our founder, Martha Kabbes Burns . Each year, ECS honors a different aspect of Mrs. Burns’
character and this year the third recipient of this award, Carrie Evans, was chosen because of her perseverance. Carrie graduated from high school one year earlier than her expected graduation date,
and achieved Honor Roll status for both semesters. She served as a member of our Student Council, was nominated for Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and was chosen as one of our five
Clarion-Ledger CLASS Award recipients. Carrie represented Education Center School in the Spring of 2005 at the National
Youth Leadership Conference, and received the 2005 Award for Outstanding School Service.
In May of 2005, Carrie was the recipient of the Baptist Health Systems Strong Woman
Award in the Promise category. This award, sponsored by Baptist Health Systems, LoveComm and Lifetime Television, is given to a young woman, aged 14-18, who
demonstrates a commitment to high personal standards.
Carrie will begin her freshman year at Millsaps College during the fall of 2005. She is the
daughter of the late Mr. Robert Evans and the late Mrs. Rosemary “Sissy” Evans.
Hunter Cobb Memorial Award – Class of 2005 – John Baxter Burns
This award is given in memory of Hunter Cobb, a senior, whose warmth and compassion for others
that will never be forgotten. He is remembered as a student whose positive attitude enabled him to overcome any boundaries set before him. The award is presented each year to the senior who
most reflects Hunter’s optimistic outlook on life and strong religious beliefs, and the 2005 recipient is John Baxter “J.B.” Burns.
John Baxter was a member of the Student Council for four years, and he actively participated
in events benefiting Clinton Animal Rescue and Adoption, Belhaven Nursing Home, and the Baptist Children’s Village. He was a three-time recipient of the Award for Outstanding School
Service, and was the top seller in the Student Council fundraiser for two years.
John Baxter is the son of Mr. Baxter Burns of Brandon and Mrs. Aimee Burns of Jackson.
This summer, he is an intern at Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions, Inc., where he is working with aggregates and asphalts testing them for compatibility and durability on the road. He will
begin his freshman year at Baton Rouge Community College, majoring in Process Technology, in the fall of 2005. He will also be interning with the Louisiana Secretary of State, Fox McKeithan.
